Ron Mahay added to bullpen

August 29, 2009

The Twins continued to pick up help for their bullpen by picking up veteran left-hander, Ron Mahay, who was recently designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals.  This is the second addition to the bullpen in as many days as the Twins are nearing the deadline for the playoff rosters.

Mahay has traveled around the Majors and has pitched for seven different teams since making his debut in 1995.  He most recently spent time with the Royals, who picked him up in 2008 for a 2-year contract worth $8 million.  The Twins will be the eighth team he has played for.

This season, Mahay was sitting on a 4.79 ERA with a 1-1 record in 41 1/3 innings.  He had given up 26 runs, 22 earned, in 41 appearances with the Royals with 34 strike outs and 19 walks.  His last appearance for the Royals was on August 22 against the Twins where he gave up one run off three hits in 1/3 of an inning pitched.

To make room for the addition of Mahay onto the roster, the Twins have optioned Armando Gabino down to Triple-A and R.A. Dickey has been removed from the 40-man roster and has been designated for assignment.
