Liriano chosen as AL Pitcher of the Month

May 3, 2010

Francisco Liriano was selected as the American League Pitcher of the Month for the month of April on Monday.  Liriano was chosen for the award after posting a 3-0 record in four starts with a low 0.93 ERA.  Liriano also struck out 27 batters in the month of April with 10 of them coming in an eight inning outing against the division rival Detroit Tigers.  On top of all that, Liriano had a 23 inning scoreless streak that happened over his 29 innings of work.

Liriano was the first Twins pitcher to win the award since Johan Santana picked it up in September 2006.  It was the second time Santana won the award that year as he also picked it up in June.  That same season Liriano picked up a pair of awards with winning the Rookie of the Month awards in June and July.  In 2006, Liriano went 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA and 144 strike outs over 121 innings.
