Gardnhire hints at 2009 outfield
The Twins have three young outfielders in Young, Gomez and Span. Span played much of 2008 for the injured Cuddyer. All four players are popular with Twins fans and the question about who would be the odd man out for 2009 swirled at the year.
Gomez a.k.a. “Go-Go” started off the season with a bang with the bat, but before the break he hit a slump and never really found a way out of it. Cuddyer played well when he was healthy, but found himself on the injured reserver for most of the season. Span was called up and although it took a few games to get his hitting going, his defense in right field was phenomenal.
Young played well, but expectations were very high for the 23 year old for the 2008 season. Young was considered the best player from the trade with Tampa Bay, which included Brendan Harris and Jason Pirdie of the Rays for Twins pitcher Matt Garza and shortstop Jason Bartlett.
Gardenhire has indicated that the Twins have not been actively shopping Young, but have heard from other teams that would be interested in a trade for Young.
